You must have been younger than the section age on 31st August 2006, so Under 9 means a Year 4 or younger, etc. The organisers reserve the right to merge sections where the number of entries makes it impractical to run them separately.

The sections correspond to School Years, i.e Under 7 is for Year 2 or younger, Under 9 is for Year 3 or 4, Under 11 is for Year 5 or 6, Under 12 is for Year 7 etc. You are allowed to enter an older age group if you wish. Candidates for the Barnet Under 11 team should enter the Under 11 section and candidates for the Under 9 team should enter the Under 9 section.

ENTRY FEES   (back to top)

£12 per entry
(ECF direct members may claim back game fee on the day.)

You may pay online using Paypal (no registration or membership necessary) or by cheque payable to BSCA posted to BSCA Individual, c/o Healthcare Direct Ltd., Care House, Chester Road, Borehamwood, WD6 1LP.

PRIZES   (back to top)

There will be:
  • trophies for the top girl and top boy in each section.
  • prizes for all scoring more than 3 points out of 6.
  • a certificate for each competitor.

  • Although this is an open tournament, the top Barnet player in each age group will be designated Barnet champion and will hold the appropriate trophy for one year. (A Barnet player is one who lives or goes to school in the London Borough of Barnet.) Players tied for a trophy will be separated by Sum of Progressive scores.

    Prize giving
Small prizes and certificates can be collected as soon as your last game is finished, trophies and cash prizes as soon as possible after the end of Round 6.

    TOURNAMENT DETAILS   (back to top)

Swiss pairings will be used. This is not a knock-out tournament. All competitors play in every round.

All sections will be played to ECF Rapidplay rules using chess clocks. Each player will be allowed 30 minutes per game. Help will be given to those not used to clocks. All sections will be graded for the ECF Rapidplay list. The ECF intend to publish the Grading list on their website. If you wish to have your Grading details (Grading Reference Number, Name, Club(s), Grade(s), Grading Category) withheld from the website version please contact the ECF.

The organisers reserve the right to merge sections in the event of a section receiving insufficient entries.

Parents and friends are welcome to stay, but we regret that only stewards and players will be allowed in the playing areas.

We do not provide any supervision of children between rounds so you must stay to look after your own children or arrange for another adult to be responsible for you child.

BSCA TEAM SELECTION  (back to top)

Barnet Schools Chess Association enters teams for the English Primary Schools Chess Association Inter-Association Championships. They compete with teams from all over the country, e.g. Sussex, Somerset and Yorkshire. Last year our Under 9 team won the National Championships and our Under 11 team came third in the National Final. Players going to school in Barnet and neighbouring boroughs are eligible for the 3 teams: Under 11, Under 9 and Girls Under 11. This tournament is the final part of the selection process for these teams.
